letter to governor

Dear Governor,
Why is that we are cutting back yearly on a program that was effective in eliminating teen smoking? Didn’t we sue tobacco companies in order to regain some of the money lost on in medicare for smoking related illnesses? Florida’s Truth campaign was decreasing the number of high school and middle school students smoking by about 10-20%. This helps to ensure as the younger people grow older and become on medicare, we will not need all of the medical assistance our grandparents have needed due to smoking. The ads decrease in teen smoking is also good because it is illegal. So why are we cutting costs on a program that saves lives, saves the state money , and helps to lower underage smoking?

I am a student at the University of Florida and I take a class on Tobacco Use and Abuse. It has taught me a lot that I did not know about smoking. Maybe a simlar clas could be provided for the state senators and representatives so that they will have slightly more informed decisions when they cut funding for anti –tobacco campaigns.

Thankyou very much for taking the time to read this letter.

Sincerely, Tracy Hallmann

That’s what you should see in police reports. They kill people that don’t smoke. Actually smoking does more harm to them then it does to those who do smoke. Most drugs just kill the people that use them. Not the people that don’t. Smoking is banned in public places, not because it is a drug but because just like a weapons, it is dangerous to those around it.

Smoking Sites

“Anti-smoking section."

http://www.no-smoke.org/
They are trying to get a smoke free law passed in Colorado and provide you with a pre- written letter to the state legislation, encouraging them to vote in favor of non-smokers, where all you have to do is provide your information .
The site has a lot of information about smoking including facts and tips about it and is a national organization. It tells people how to try to protect themselves against secondhand smoke and a lot of other items. The website has a broad span of content regarding smoking.

http://www.tobaccofreeutah.org/ets.html
This site is specifically about secondhand smoke and has many articles about the health problems associated with second hand smoke. Also though in the sidebar it shows tips how to quit and also has activities for youth and more. One project they show is “Bridge the Gap,” a program involving community representatives that is targeted at different populations of people in the effort to decrease tobacco use and therefore secondhand smoke.

“Pro-smoking section”

http://www.poconolibertarians.org/smokers.html
This site shows ten myths about smoking one of which is that people smoke because of advertising. It disputes the fact. It also has many other common arguments against tobacco listed and disputed. It’s exactly what one would expect a pro- smoking site to be.

http://www.smokersclubinc.com/
This site is actually pretty funny. One part says “why do we die?” and the answer is given “we are human, we all die.” It also has a picture of an army guy on the front smoking and gives his name and say “God Bless Him.”

Functional Assesment of Being Late

Most people who know me know that I am always late. Only I really precede my behavior. I guess not planning very well ahead of time and underestimating the actual length of time that things take, also contribute to it. I also procrastinate alot and work late at work and try to make up hours sleeping. The behavior doesn't achieve alot. I'm always getting in trouble for being late- whether it be for work or school. It does allow me more time to achieve other things though, especially sleep. So I guess in a way it allows me more time to relax. This habit can be related to smoking because a) I've grown accustomed to being late just like smoking becomes routine for smokers. Being late is routine for me.) and b) It does allow me to relax and sleep longer, where many smokers claim that smoking relaxes them. A good example is that I need to leave for work in a half hour, but first need to shower get changed brush my teeth and let Velma out. So adios.

Culture of Smoke

I'm going compare "The High Life," and,"The Low Life."

"The High Life," discusses and shows images of how the upper classes enjoyed tobacco. Many high ranking officials were drawn smoking pipes and possessing tobacco paper. One thing to notice is that in the pictures depicted in this article, the subjects seem to be blowing smoke down on others as if an act of power and worthiness. The Gentlemen's Clubs, many created to smoke, were extremely popular and made to seem elite.

"The Low Life," depicts more the control that cigarettes held on lower classes. Smoking, compared to drinking, was considered to have a calming and numbing effect. The thought that calmed and drunken people don't riot or compare about tyranny or poor conditions, let the powerful feel as if they had control on peasants. Also, this effect not only helped to quell the masses, the rich made money off of the smoking habit too.

These two articles can be very easily compared to today. America is a tad bit different due to our large middle class and smaller upper and lower classes. Smoking today is still considered to be a dirty little habit by many but also many do it to be "one of the crowd" just like back with the smoking clubs. There are many people today that can't afford health medications but will still find a way to buy a pack or two a day. Now is that control over a person or what? This would constitute the lower class. Then there are still upper class individuals who have country clubs and men's clubs in which smoking cigars is very popular. Rich men in movies are always portayed with fine cigars so there is the upper class.

"The High Life," is written where the upper class have smoking as a recreation and as a novelty of the time. "The Low Life," is presented as the idea of control over the lower class. The artwork used as evidence for each article has different time frames. "The High Life," came first, in the sixteenth century, as a novelty. "The Low Class," shown in the seventeenth century, seems to have followed the upper class. The portrayals seem different between the two. One similarity of the two is no matter the reason started, of novelty or drunkeness, the portraits continued to show men smoking throughout at least two to three centuries. These basic characteristics can still be found today.

The weird thing is if you think about it, the upper class started smoking first so they were already "calmed and drunken," but they still ruled. So why did they believe that it would put peasants in such a haze if they were still able to function and think with it? Maybe they didn't believe that peasants were smart enough or something to over power the effect or they were only able to form one emotion or state at a time : tranquility.

My Mom and I

This is Velma. She thinks that she is a cat. She likes to climb on the furniture and she hates water. My boyfriend bought her to be a guard dog for me and she doesn't bark at people, only at dogs. She'll bark at statues of dogs and dogs on tv and in movies. We learned in Catwoman that she'll bark at cats too. Posted by Hello

Cures and Crtically Thinking

The website is http://www.quitsmokingguaranteed.com/index.htm

1. Honesty - How can a drug be guaranteed to work in 7 days when people have such problems quitting. Most successful programs are a couple week long programs. It's not logical that a special pill or program can work in 7 days. 7 days does work great for no trial period.
2.Suffieciency- They only have testimonials and lists of herbs. The herbs are said to have certain smoking remedies each. That is all they have and their word. Ooh lala. One must try it themselves to prove it.
3. Logic- Aromatherapy has been said to work for some people. Some people want to stop smoking. Aromatherapy works for people to stop smoking. Where is the logic here? Just because it works to relax a person does not mean it can take cravings away. Have you ever heard of aromatherapy as a diet.
